Task Assistance Dogs

Task dogs are trained to assist wheelchair users over the age of 17 with practical everyday activities, such as:

  • Opening and closing doors

  • Retrieve items like a mobile phone, crutch etc

  • Pick up dropped articles like keys, bag etc

  • Help remove jacket, socks, gloves etc

  • Press a pedestrian crossing button

An assistance dog can provide practical support while also empowering greater independence and participation in daily life. Beyond assisting with physical tasks, the partnership with a dog can increase confidence, encourage community engagement, and enhance a person's sense of safety and security when navigating the world independently.

In order to effectively utilize a task dog, applicants must also have the verbal communication and cognitive abilities necessary to give and understand the dogs’ trained commands.
